Our Story

The mother of all Fashion Designing Association in Ghana was established on the 5th day of October 1979 and registered as a Trade Association in the year 2014 under the Commission for Technical and vocational Education and Training (CTVET), which was also established by the Acts of Parliament, Act 718 of 2006 and Legislative Instrument, LI 2195 of 2012 which empower us to be a unique body to legally ply the sewing trade to clothe the Ghanaian citizenry and beyond, and disseminate knowledge for the development of human resources for nation building and whereas the 1992 Constitution of Ghana allows for freedom of association for purpose of common good.

Who We Are

It was also incorporated under the Registrar General in the year 2014 .
GNTDA has a working Constitution that makes provision for proper management structure, accountability, seperation of powers and administrative system and clear election procedures to ensure smooth and transparent transfer of power at regular intervals.
GNTDA has an established educational system (Intermediate Examination) which is organized twice every year (April and September) that prepares her learners for the national TVET qualifications.

Past Presidents


Nana Asafo Boakye

First National President
1979 – 1983

The association was only at Greater Accra during his time. 
Currently a chief at Worawora.

Mr. Dan Molton

Second National President
1984 – 1994

He was the national president for ten years. 
He extended the association to other regions of the country.
He was a politician who was affiliated to PNDC, his affiliation helped in spreading the association to other regions.
He assisted Mr. Asafo (the first president) in establishing the association; and helped Mr. Asafo to be the first president of the association.

Mr. Ben Kittah

Third National President
1994 -2002

He was the formal regional chairman of Greater Accra being the second to hold that position.   
He served for eight years. 
After his term he wanted to serve for four more years which brought chaos at Bolga in the year 2002, but some regional chairperson stood against such a move. Prominent among such was Mr. Anas. 

Mr. Samuel Kojo Safo

Fourth National President
2003 -2006

He was the greater Accra chairman before he contested at Bolga.
He unfortunately became an absentee president because he had to travel to America.
Rev. Akwandoh who was his vice at the time had to do most of his work because he was not around.
He was not a professional dressmaker or tailor but was elected unconstitutionally  as the chairman by the Wato zone because he had employed a lot of people at the time in batic making and tie & dye
He moved up the ladder to become the president.

Rev. Jonathan Akwandoh

Fifth National President
2006 – 2010

He took over from Mr. Safo.  
It was during his tenure of office that the association held the first dinner at the conference.
He wanted to go unopposed during the national election at Cape Coast. He decided not to stand for the election when there was an opposing candidate.
He led some of the regions to break-away from the association; this gave birth to a new association by name Garment makers. 

Alhaji Safianu Bala Saaed

Sixth National President

2011 – 2019
Because of the break-away, he had to toil greatly to bring back some regions that moved from the association. 
He strengthened the unity in the association.
He lobbied for machines, computers, motorbikes from the NDC government to all regions of the association. 
He introduced the “one master, one industrial machine” slogan which helped the members acquaint themselves with the use of industrial machines.
He supplied over 4,000 industrial machines to members.
He separated the Greater Accra office from the National Office.
He demoted administrators back to secretaries. 
The first president from a different region

Mrs. Joana Eshun Mensah

Current President
2019 to date

She introduced the Association flag and colours by making them official.
She composed the national anthem of the association. 
She lobbied for the acquisition of several plots of land for the association. 
She led the NEC 2 of the association to the President of the republic at the jubilee house.
She led in the purchase of a vehicle for the national office of the association.
She strengthened the relationship with GIZ and GTP with association.
